Being Vegetarian

The horror.
If you go vegetarian for a week and find that you can't eat well, your problem is not a lack of meat, but that you can't cook and have no access to Asian restaurants or decent pizza or Mediterranean food or vegetables. Otherwise, you'd be fine.
Very true.

Why Our Media Sucked Then And Still Sucks Now

People like Anne Korblut.
Anne E. Kornblut: I haven't read McClellan's book yet, but really look forward to it, especially on the point you raise. My immediate reaction upon hearing he'd said that was, "Wait, what!? Isn't it the job of those employed at the White House to be straightforward in the first place?" In my experience, reporters do know the importance of the job, and face many obstacles in trying to get information (especially from this administration). But I also do think all of our efforts have been redoubled over the last few years. I'm so proud of my colleagues at the Post who covered Walter Reed for that very reason.
Completely f-ing clueless.

Let me repeat.

"The job of those employed at the White House to be straightforward."

Huh?

So it's your job just be a f-ing stenographer for whatever "straightforward" information they decide to provide you with.

Now, that's journalism!!!

These people make my brain hurt.

More here if you dare, which basically says, "It's scary asking the Preznit questions about why he wants to bomb a country that hasn't attacked us and doesn't have WMDs. It's easier to let him have his war and send our brave troops to be killed and maimed."

Hooray Hooray

I'm your silver lining.
If there is a silver lining to this endless primary battle, it has been the public decomposition of Clinton apparatchik Lanny Davis. Davis, you may remember, was a big Bill Clinton defender during impeachment; he now spends his time blogging and spinning for Senator Clinton's campaign.
Lanny, please.

Just.

Obama's Speech

This speech makes me feel like I should be doing something different with my life, or at least doing MORE.
Each of you will have the chance to make your own discovery in the years to come. And I say “chance” because you won’t have to take it. There’s no community service requirement in the real world; no one forcing you to care. You can take your diploma, walk off this stage, and chase only after the big house and the nice suits and all the other things that our money culture says you should by. You can choose to narrow your concerns and live your life in a way that tries to keep your story separate from America’s.

But I hope you don’t. Not because you have an obligation to those who are less fortunate, though you do have that obligation. Not because you have a debt to all those who helped you get here, though you do have that debt.

It’s because you have an obligation to yourself. Because our individual salvation depends on collective salvation. Because thinking only about yourself, fulfilling your immediate wants and needs, betrays a poverty of ambition. Because it’s only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential and discover the role you’ll play in writing the next great chapter in America’s story.

This speech is also why I will be so proud when he is elected President.

(Some people/candidates would have you believe that talk is meaningless. I say they're wrong, especially when it's backed up by action. They also have probably never been able to give a speech like this, so what would they know. These people know who I'm talking about, and so do you.)

Puzzling

Hillary's supporters.
I don't mean all people who supported her, but the ones who are still pushing for her candidacy. As far as I can tell they want her to be the candidate and really just don't care how that happens as long as it does. At this point only a drastic rule change combined with a massive shift in support from superdelegates even gets her close to the nomination. In another words, cheating combined with the smoke-filled room residents overturning the outcome of the primary process.

Christopher's Choice for VP

Optimus Prime

PROS:
- heroic
- beloved by millions of people
- doesn’t need his own Secret Service detail, as he is a giant battle robot
- can voice over his own ads and it will be awesome

CONS:
- Energon needs may betray problematic views on energy policy
- although technically able to assume presidency on grounds that adoption of current big-rig transformed form counts as a “rebirth” and it happened on American soil, expect a court challenge to his viability
- predictable target of negative ads: “How Do We Know He Will Not Go Insane And Try To Exterminate Humanity?”
- likely Megatron endorsement of John McCain in response

Something Is Wrong

40 months without majority approval and a new record for disapproval, yet some of the media probably still think he's a good guy to have a beer with and that the blogosphere is shrill and scary and that it's all the dirty f-ing hippies fault because they were right about the war.
He is shockingly unpopular, and this is a reality that neither the Congress nor the media has quite figured out how to address. It's something of a crisis for our political system that the president has now spent over three years hated and mistrusted by the majority of the country, and yet has never felt the need to take steps to restore his legitimacy. Something is wrong.
Something is wrong. Understatement of the year.

What's wrong is that the media didn't want to address it (because it wasn't a Democrat), so they didn't.

All news is good for Republicans, even record "wrong track" and disapproval numbers! Even when Democrats are picking up House seats in super-red districts. But, but, Obama doesn't wear a flag pin on his lapel or American flag boxers and he "says" he's Christian, as far as we know, and, and he can't get working class white people to vote for him, even though he won Missouri and Wisconsin.

People That Make My Head Hurt

Joe Lieberman.
But the fact that the spokesperson for Hamas would say they would welcome the election of Senator Obama really does raise the question, "Why?"
And it suggests the difference between these two candidates.
Cokie Roberts.
LESLEY: Well let’s tell everyone what she said. There was a suggestion that the white vote will never go to Obama. Something like that. So why don’t you think that was race-baiting?

COKIE: Well, because what she was doing was describing what her vote was. And her description was 100 percent accurate. It’s become very difficult in this country to use words like "white." I must say, through this campaign I have found it interesting and disturbing that even though we are happily at a place in our history where it is not appropriate, and considered inappropriate, to say anything negative about race, it is apparently just fine to say things negative about sex. And we certainly saw that in the course of this campaign.

I do think that she probably shouldn’t have used the word she used, but we use these words in talking about the exit polls all the time. She gets the majority of the white vote. She gets an overwhelming majority of the lower income white vote and of voters who have traditionally been up for grabs in the general election.

LESLEY: You know, it’s interesting because if you are at all sympathetic to Sen. Clinton, then you give her the benefit of the doubt. And if you’re really for Obama, you saw race-baiting. It’s interesting.

COKIE: But that’s true about everything now. I mean, it makes me nuts. The truth is that nobody gives anybody the benefit of the doubt. And part of this is the ferocity of the blogosphere — that people are all evil on the other side and they’re all doing something terrible. And that is the way our politics is these days. And Barack Obama might say constantly that he wants to get beyond that and bring people together and all that. But that certainly has not been true of his supporters.
Preznit Bush.
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush said in an interview out Tuesday that he quit playing golf in 2003 out of respect for the families of US soldiers killed in the conflict in Iraq, now in its sixth year.

Obama vs. Pander McClinton

Obama:

Pander McClinton:

Friedman:
It is great to see that we finally have some national unity on energy policy. Unfortunately, the unifying idea is so ridiculous, so unworthy of the people aspiring to lead our nation, it takes your breath away. Hillary Clinton has decided to line up with John McCain in pushing to suspend the federal excise tax on gasoline, 18.4 cents a gallon, for this summer’s travel season. This is not an energy policy. This is money laundering: we borrow money from China and ship it to Saudi Arabia and take a little cut for ourselves as it goes through our gas tanks. What a way to build our country. When the summer is over, we will have increased our debt to China, increased our transfer of wealth to Saudi Arabia and increased our contribution to global warming for our kids to inherit.

No, no, no, we’ll just get the money by taxing Big Oil, says Mrs. Clinton. Even if you could do that, what a terrible way to spend precious tax dollars — burning it up on the way to the beach rather than on innovation?

The McCain-Clinton gas holiday proposal is a perfect example of what energy expert Peter Schwartz of Global Business Network describes as the true American energy policy today: “Maximize demand, minimize supply and buy the rest from the people who hate us the most.”

Good for Barack Obama for resisting this shameful pandering.

The Choice

Be the change you wish to see in the world, or let Hillary take care of everything for you, because she knows what's best.
This is a core difference between Obama's and Clinton's philosophy, it seems to me. Clinton believes government can save people and she, as the benign representative of government, can bestow equality on minorities. You just have to vote for Democrats, give money to the Democratic party interest groups (like the Human Rights Campaign) and your equality will come eventually (but always later than they say). I prefer an approach that tells gay people that they need to get off their asses, talk to straight people, build their relationships, support their community, empower themselves and win the argument for inclusion and integration. No politician can do that for us. And Obama is one of the few politicians who is honest enough to say so.

Kentucky

Bastion of progressive thought.
"I've talked to people--a woman who was chair of county elections last year, she said she wouldn't vote for a black man," J.K. Patrick told Packer. And he won't either. "I really don't want an African-American as President ... I thought about it. I think he would put too many minorities in positions over the white race. That's my opinion. After 1964, you saw what the South did ... There's a lot of white people that just wouldn't vote for a colored person. Especially older people."

With frankness like this, it was probably no accident that it was Kentucky Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY) who got in trouble two weeks ago for calling Obama "that boy" at a GOP party dinner in his home district -- a comment for which he later apologized.
Probably find similar talk in southern Indiana and Illinois, too.

Let me highlight a bit: "...too many minorities in positions over the white race. After 1964, you saw what the South did..."

Poor whitey. The scary colored man is going to oppress them.

Different world that I have no need to understand. (Sorry Barack. I know we're supposed to come together, but I'm just not there yet.)

The Life of a Cub Fan

Sky high to rock bottom.

On days like this, I go back to this post.
Will the Cubs rip my still-beating heart out of my chest and throw it on the floor at some point this year? Of course. That goes without saying. But as I was saying to Kate last night, you learn early on as a Cubs fan that you can’t steal yourself against the inevitable hurt by playing it cool when they’re doing well. You’ll suffer just as much in the end. So since there’s no way to protect yourself against the hurt, when the times are good, you need to just fully commit and extract every last moment of joy. It’s like love in that way.
