Rewind, the Cubs edition

May: Despair. OK, a bit premature, I admit.
Early September: Panic and angst. Seen this story before. Maybe.
Mid-September: Liveblogging - the experiment. Neuroses on display. Success.
Late September: Lou, it's what you do to me.
September 28th: NL Central Champs!

Let's just leave it there. We all know what happened against Arizona, and then what happened to Arizona.

Doomed Missions

What Matthew said.
I don't know whether or not it's "our business" but the point is that we're unlikely to be able to do this effectively. The US, being rich and strong, has a good deal of influence to throw around in Pakistan. But it's much easier for Pakistani actors to manipulate US policy than the reverse. We don't have the know-how, we don't have the expertise, and we never will. What we need to do is focus on what we can know -- what are our key interests in Pakistan -- and articulate them clearly and consistently combined with the proviso that we're willing to work with whatever kind of leadership Pakistan has on ways to advance our interests. Trying to pick the "best" faction and then shift things around so they wind up in power seems like a doomed mission. In general, the idea that the correct response to 9/11 was for the United States to start engaging more vigorously in efforts to micromanage political outcomes in Muslim countries seems badly mistaken. We need to make our policies more robust against internal political disagreements in the Islamic world, not do a better job of picking sides.

The L Word

Why can't people (media, political figures) just call the Bush Administration what they are?

Like Matt.

Wait, I forgot Al Gore claimed to invent the internet.

But, then again, he didn't.

So that makes the media liars, right?

Or just defenders of the village narrative?

Huckabee

Trying to be Rudy!
During a campaign stop in Iowa today, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee commented on the conditions at the military detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying that “the inmates there were getting a whole lot better treatment” than “prisoners in Arkansas.” “I hope our guys don’t see this,” added Huckabee. “They’ll all want to be transferred to Guanatanmo.”
Idiot.

Obama

A nice mind shift.

Isn't everyone tired of the lame (kindergarten essay) and offensive (Obama as drug dealer or secret Muslim "Barack Hussein Obama") attacks by Clinton surrogates?

If Hillary is so experienced why does she appear to have an undisciplined campaign?

Or, is this just how the Clintons roll when things don't go their way?

Why I Love Radiohead

David Byrne interviews Thom Yorke.
Yorke: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was just thinking while you were saying that: How does a record company get their hands on that? It makes me think of the No Logo book where Naomi Klein describes how the Nike people would pay guys to get down with the kids on the street. I know for a fact that major record labels do the same thing. But no one has ever explained to me exactly how. I mean, do they lurk around in the discussion boards and post "Have you heard the..."? Maybe they do. And then I was thinking about that Johnny Cash film, when Cash walks in and says, "I want to do a live record in a prison," and his label thinks he's bonkers. Yet at the same time, it was able to somehow understand what kids wanted and give it to him. Whereas now, I think there's a lack of understanding. It's not about who's ripping off whom, and it's not about legal injunctions, and it's not about DRM and all that sort of stuff. It's about whether the music affects you or not. And why would you worry about an artist or a company going after people copying their music if the music itself is not valued?

I'm definitely going to pick up the latest 1900s album. I really liked Plume Delivery.

Clinton

Not a genius.
Bill Clinton was, to be sure, a very good politician, but that aptitude mainly manifested in getting himself elected. There's no real evidence that he's got the same talent for getting other people elected. His tenure did not end with increased Democratic majorities, a Democratic successor, or a vastly expanded social welfare state. The 90s were, to be sure, better for Democrats than the Bush years, but they shouldn't be blown out of proportion.

Pathetic

Bill Clinton.
Meanwhile, this line on the war seems like a pretty pathetic dodge. Nobody's actually suggesting that because many members of congress voted the wrong way on the war we should elect a television commentator instead. Indeed, almost no television commentators were right about the war. By contrast, a lot of politicians were right about the war. Nancy Pelosi was right. Russ Feingold was right. Carl Levin was right. Howard Dean was right. And Barack Obama was right. If Clinton's going to run on her alleged greater experience, surely it's fair to point to the content of that experience and ask whether or not it's all good experience.
Please, please don't let her win the nomination. It's time for change.
