Music Snobs

I knew there was a reason I identified with Jim from "The Office."

According to his playlist on iTunes (yes, he has a playlist, as do each of the major characters...check out all of the playlists), he is a self-professed music snob, and here's what he says about Wilco:

"There's about 15 Wilco songs I'd like to put on this list. But that would be boring. So: buy everything Wilco puts out."

Here is his playlist in its entirety:

1. Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
2. Sing - Travis
3. Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire
4. When I Laugh - The Glands
5. Chicago - Sufjan Stevens
6. Rich Girl - Gwen Stefani & Eve
7. California Stars - Wilco
8. Ghost - Neutral Milk Hotel
9. A Quick One, While He's Away - The Who
10. Try Not to Breathe - R.E.M.
11. Gone for Good - The Shins
12. Drunk by Noon - The Handsome Family

The commentary with each track is hilarious. Do check it out. For the last track, "Drunk by Noon", here's what Jim has to say:

"A really depressing, but very pretty, song. I think about the title every day, Monday through Friday, around 11:45 AM."

Anyone else identify with that sentiment?

Thought of the Day

Be where you are. Otherwise, you will miss your life.
-Buddha

I'm not going to clutter this with commentary. For a moment, I'm just going to be. Anyone who knows how my mind works, will know exactly how difficult that is.

See, I told you. I couldn't just let it be. Man, this is going to be hard.

Practice. Practice. Practice is what I need.

Looking backward

Lately, when it comes to music, I find myself looking backward.

It's not a result on any discontent with new music. There's a bunch of new music love and I don't think it has ever been easier to find new music, thanks to technology and alternative media.

It isn't a reflection of the state of music.

It's me.

I've been picking up music I was introduced to as a kid. I saw the movie Tommy when I was 6 with my dad. Tina Turner scared the crap out of me as the acid queen and who could forget Elton John on stilts as the pinball wizard. I still love the movie out of childhood nostalgia, but i love The Who's album version more.

I've been picking up music I missed or had only a superficial appreciation of as a teenager, like The Smiths. I'm addicted and I basically have added their entire collection to my wishlist on Amazon. I did this same thing with The Clash probably 5 years ago.

I've also been picking up early albums by bands I have always loved, like U2. I bought Boy recently and it is now one of my favorite U2 albums. I can't stop listening to Out of Control.

I've been picking up music from mog recommendations, like Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmillson.

Maybe I just love discovering the new in old music. Maybe I just love catching up to greatness I missed out the first time around, due to age or my musical ignorance.

One thing is certain. I love music, there's no breaking this habit, and there's no end to finding something new in music to appreciate.

Lyrics of the Day

Pearl Jam, Present Tense
Do you see the way that tree bends?
Does it inspire?
Leaning out to catch the sun's rays
A lesson to be applied
Are you getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

You can spend your time alone, re-digesting past regrets, oh
Or you can come to terms and realize
You're the only one who can't forgive yourself, oh
Makes much more sense, to live in the present tense

Have you ideas on how this life ends?
Checked your hands and studied the lines
Have you the belief that the road ahead, ascends off into the light?
Seems that needlessly it's getting harder
To find an approach and a way to live
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

You can spend your time alone re-digesting past regrets, oh
Or you can come to terms and realize
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, oh
Makes much more sense, to live in the present tense

Newsflash

Lieberman (I-Liebermanland) still sucks.
This morning on Fox News, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) echoed the Bush administration and claimed that people who oppose escalation in Iraq are emboldening terrorists. “[I]t will discourage our troops, who we’re asking to carry out this new plan, and it will encourage the enemy,” Lieberman said.
Joe and Fox News, perfect for each other. Citizens of Connecticut must be soooo proud.

Here's to a Lieberman-proof majority in 08.

Switch parties, Joe, I dare ya.

New Year Wish

Well, my blogging is off to a slow start in 2007. Chalk it up to post-midterm election let down and holiday craziness. If I'm going to meet my goal of averaging a post a day, I better get going.

Happy New Year, and allow me to quote some Pearl Jam lyrics to express my wish for the world in 2007.
And love,... Wish the world could go again with love
One can't seem to have enough
